‘We are a long way from Kansas’ as Dorothy once said. Well, we are also a long way from our EEA – our environment of evolutionary adaptedness. Human beings and our ancestors spent millions of years wandering around the Savannah as hunter gatherers in tribes of kin and near kin. This was the physical and social environment which shaped not just our physiology, our diet and our physical activity patterns, but also our social relationships.

It has been suggested that many modern humans suffer from NDD or ‘nature deficit disorder’. Well, perhaps many of us suffer from ‘HTDS ‘ – human touch deficit syndrome’ (I made that one up). Watch most groups of primates and you will see how important touch and grooming is for stress reduction and social cohesion. So do another group living social primate a favour, and give them a hug’
